Let’s begin with the benefits of Website Hosting Hub. They are simple, inexpensive, transparent, and useful. These are all that a small-business owner, beginner or start-up would need.

Pricing

Web Hosting Hub offers 3 pricing tiers: Spark, Nitro and Dynamo. Prices start at $9.99/month and go up to $17.99/month.

They often offer a discount/coupon of around 40% on the first year hosting here. This means that you can get Spark plans for less than $6/mo (if you, like other companies, commit for more than one year).

Hosting industry makes it difficult to compare apples with apples when it comes to pricing. Hosting companies make a tradeoff between websites on one server. This is where most of the confusion around comparisons comes from.

It is the three core “D”s that you pay for: domains, databases and disk space. All other items are upsells or bonuses that can be compared separately.

Web Hosting Hub has no caps. They limit you to two websites and 10 databases on their super-cheap Spark plan. This is fine for many small site owners. One single WordPress install requires one database. The 2 other plans have unlimited usage and are compatible with HostGator’s Baby and Business plans, GoDaddy’s Deluxe plan. You can enjoy a lot of benefits from them, as they permit unlimited domains and websites on their Dynamo and Nitro plans.

Web Hosting hub offers many unique plan features, which make them stand apart from other web hosting companies.

They offer Solid State Drives (SSDs), just like their sister company InMotion hosting. This feature helps improve server performance and is not available in the smaller (lower) market.

As an East Coast resident, I like the option to choose from different data centers (i.e. where your website files are stored). The fastest speed for users is usually not the best location for small shared server websites. It is an added bonus that they offer, especially if the files you are uploading or editing are closer to the data center.

Their standard hosting package is also very competitive with other providers. Their domain names are free for one year. However, I would recommend using a domain registry to register long-term as most hosting companies charge for renewals.

Web Hosting hub offers all the marketing credits for Facebook, Google, and Bing. If you require it, they have an excellent email interface. You can also use their free website transfer service if you have a website already and find the website migration process overwhelming. You will also receive a free shared SSL certificate, unlimited bandwidth and unlimited disk space.

Apps, Usability, & Builders

However, most web hosts are not for everyone. They want more than just professionals running good equipment. You want to provide a great user experience.

It can seem daunting to set up a website . This is why it’s so important for web hosting companies to make it easy. Many people choose to go the website-builder route, where you don’t own your website but you lease the hosting, files, and platform.

They will ask you a few questions at the end of your checkout to determine your level of experience in order to send you the appropriate Getting Started materials or to connect you with an account specialist.

They manage your account via an Account Management Platform (also known as Control Panel) just like their sister company InMotion. This is the place you log in to manage your hosting account and install apps. It also allows you to access your actual server.

Their servers are also running with industry-standard cPanel software so there are no surprises. To install your website, you can use website set-up guides.

You can also use their install scripts, which install most web apps (ie WordPress, Joomla, etc.) in just a few steps.

The screens are clean and uncluttered. They install WordPress cleanly without any plugins.

BoldGrid is an overlay software that runs on WordPress. This means you don’t have to use a proprietary website builder like HostGator.

Performance (for Shared Hosting)

The shared servers can be compared to apartments. You own your space. Everything in your space is yours. Everything is cool, as long your neighbors don’t invite hordes to your place – or as long your landlord doesn’t re-configure your walls in your apartment.

This means that even though you don’t pay for or need a VPS (ie a townhome), or a dedicated web server (ie your own piece of land), you still expect your server’s performance to be good.

Many web hosting companies are notorious for slow server performance and overloading. This is due to many factors. You should not judge a company based on an intermittent issue. YouTube, Amazon, Facebook and Netflix all experienced downtime during the past year. Many things can be done by companies to improve performance, but this is beyond the scope of this review.

To get an overall sense of performance, I look at three metrics.

First is Time to First Byte. This is the speed at which the server returns the first bit of information it receives from a browser. For TTFB, Web Hosting Hub is quite solid –

Memory allocation is the second. The second is memory allocation. This refers to how much memory the host has allocated to the account by default. WordPress works better when there is more memory available (such as more than 128M). Web Hosting Hub offers generous amounts of both the installed amount and the most current versions of PHP, MySQL and other software.

Third, uptime. Their uptime guarantee is 99.9%, and they have very rare incidents according to their network status page.

Web Hosting hub does a great job in terms of performance for a hosting company.

Customer Support / Service

The thing about customer service ratings online for companies is that at worst the stories are either untrue or exaggerated. At best the stories are anecdotal, and are not representative of actual experience. This is why 1-star and 5-star Amazon reviews are usually worthless. Tip: Take a look at the 3-star ratings. This is also why random stories about hosting tech support are not worth reading without further investigation.

My personal approach to customer service is to look for “proxies”, which are things that indicate or stand for another thing. I look for “proxies” to indicate whether there is the right culture or processes in place.

Web Hosting Hub’s “proxies”, their US-based support staff, indicated that their customer service was an investment. The right processes are evident in their ticketing system that spans multiple access channels. You can chat with them or call their support team.

Both their Onboarding emails as well as the Community Q&As reflect a culture that focuses on the root cause and not just the symptoms. They’ve been doing it for years. Here’s an example from 2016.

Cons of Web Hosting Hub

Web Hosting Hub isn’t the best hosting company. There is no such thing. There are many Web Hosting Hub complaints. Some of these complaints are valid, while others are purely anecdotal. They have many pros, enough to allow me to use them in some projects. But they also have cons.

Growth Path for Servers

Web Hosting Hub’s main con is their main selling point – all that they do is web hosting.

While most websites don’t require more than a shared hosting server for their sites, it is convenient to upgrade your hardware as your site grows. You will need to change companies if you are starting with Web Hosting Hub but you reach the point where you require a virtual private server.

You will need to change if you need to scale up hardware, or get a virtual private server for Extended Validation SSL. While Web Hosting Hub is an asset in many ways, it can also be problematic for some businesses.

Paid Backups and Domain Renewal

Backups are essential because things can happen. Software or a system must be installed to ensure that your website is always available for you in case of an emergency. Hosting companies often offer different levels of backups to ensure your website is protected in an emergency.

Other Backups should not be left to the hosting company. It is your responsibility to set it up and maintain it. It’s a good idea to have a backup of your backup.

InMotion offers free backups. It doesn’t cost to access them. HostGator offers free backup but charges for access to the backup. Web Hosting Hub charges an additional $1/month for backup, regardless of whether you use it.

Although it’s not a lot, it can make a difference in price comparisons. You shouldn’t need it because you are doing it yourself. To protect users against bad choices, I like HostGator’s pricing model.

Many users love bundling domains and hosting providers. You can have better control, lower prices, and better protection if you keep your domain name apart from hosting. Check out my top domain registrars list to see which ones I recommend.

If you want to renew your domain name through Web Hosting Hub, it will cost $14.99 per year. Although it’s not expensive, it is more than what you can find elsewhere.

Paid backups, expensive domain renewal, and high prices can be a problem for some users, especially when compared to hosts who include it in their lower-priced plans (ie HostGator).

Web Design & Marketing Services

Web Hosting Hub provides custom web design and marketing services in addition to hosting.

Web design, like domain names, is an additional business to web hosting. It is likely to be a good investment. It is logical on one level.

It’s easy to put graphics, templates and layout with a beautiful homepage.

The businesses are however very different. Web designers offering “hosting” are often not successful. It’s often a way to increase revenue and secure a client. Hosting companies that offer in-house design services are a red flag to me.

Web Hosting Hub’s target market is so I will give them the benefit-of-the-doubt and say it’s a great service to offer one-stop services, especially for simple websites. Even so, they are more of an “create your site” company than a web hosting company.

Upsells

Web Hosting Hub offers a simple ordering and onboarding process. They do offer upsells. They promote McAfee Email Spam Protection, as well as their own plans.

It is, however, a con because of the Dynamo-upsell. They provide some insight at the bottom of their Plans about how the Dynamo plan offers higher performance, though it’s not shown in the feature tables.

On the checkout page is a hard upsell to get better performance with the higher priced plan. This feels less like a sales pitch (pay more to get [specific item]), and more like an upsell (“pay more to get better stuff!”). This makes me wonder if Nitro is slowing down for some reason.

Web Hosting Hub is an excellent addition to the beginner end of the hosting landscape. They are worth a look.
